Anaerobic bacteria play an important role in human health and disease by being an important part of the gut microbiota and also being implicated as causative agents of various diseases. Though fascinating, the field of anaerobic microbiology has its own challenges mainly due to their demanding growth requirements which makes their isolation and identification difficult. Furthermore, anaerobic infections are often polymicrobial in nature. This has resulted in anaerobes to be overlooked and neglected specially in low-income countries. Considering their significant role in human and animal infectious diseases as well as in environmental microbiology, the Anaerobic Forum of India was founded in January 2021 under the leadership of Rama Chaudhry (professor and head of Department of Microbiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi). This Forum has many microbiologists on board from across the nation who have been working in the field of anaerobes.
