Abstract
Thegutmicrobiomehasvariedimpactonthewellbeingofhumans.Itisinfluencedbydifferentfactorssuchasage,dietaryhabits,socio-economicstatus,geographiclocation,andgeneticmakeupofindividuals.Fordevisingmicrobiome-basedtherapies,itiscrucialtoidentifypopulationspecificfeaturesofthegutmicrobiome.Indianpopulationisoneofthemostethnically,culturally,andgeographicallydiverse,butthegutmicrobiomefeaturesremainlargelyunknown.ThepresentstudydescribesgutmicrobialcommunitiesofhealthyIndiansubjectsandcomparesitwiththemicrobiotafromotherpopulations.Basedonlargedifferencesinalphadiversityindices,abundanceof11bacterialphylaandindividualspecificOTUs,wereportinter-individualvariationsingutmicrobialcommunitiesofthesesubjects.WhilethegutmicrobiomeofIndiansisdifferentfromthatofAmericans,itsharedhighsimilaritytoindividualsfromtheIndiansubcontinenti.e.,Bangladeshi.DistinctivefeatureofIndiangutmicrobiotaisthepredominanceofgenusPrevotellaandMegasphaera.Further,whencomparedwithothernon-humanprimates,itappearsthatIndianssharemoreOTUswithomnivorousmammals.Ourmetagenomicimputationindicateshigherpotentialforglycanbiosynthesisandxenobioticmetabolisminthesesubjects.OurstudyindicatesurgentneedofidentificationofpopulationspecificmicrobiomebiomarkersofIndiansubpopulationstohavemoreholisticviewoftheIndiangutmicrobiomeanditshealthimplications.
